Over the first year of his term, Sunday worked to seize illicit drugs and root out fraud across communities.
It has been one year since Attorney General Dave Sunday has taken office in Pennsylvania. During the first year of his term, Sunday prioritized removing illicit drugs from communities, recovering illegal firearms, and combatting scammers.
In total, according to Sunday, more than 56 million fentanyl doses and 100,000 fentanyl pills were seized during his first year as attorney general. The estimated street cost of the seizures amounts to $58 million.
Most of the fentanyl was recovered from Philadelphia and surrounding counties.
In October, Attorney General Sunday announced the Law Enforcement Treatment Initiative, a program that offers an alternative to incarceration for non-violent offenders. The program is available in 33 counties in Pennsylvania.
During the past year, Sunday led task forces through the recovery of 539 illegal firearms. The recoveries included guns that were illegally trafficked, had no serial numbers, or were in the possession of individuals prohibited from purchasing firearms.
In efforts to root out fraud, the Attorney General’s office charged 120 defendants with fraud, abuse, or criminal waste related to the Medicaid system. Another 550 cases and investigations are currently active.
Sunday launched 100 new investigations into large-scale theft and fraud under the Organized Crime Retail Unit.
Attorney General Sunday also increased the office’s focus on combatting increasingly frequent scams that are targeting Pennsylvanians. His office investigated more than 4,000 scam-related complaints that totaled $76 million in losses.
“This first year as your attorney general was full of unique challenges and achievements, including progress in defending Pennsylvanians from modern-day threats… our great team embraces the hard work that comes with protecting people, families, and their assets,” said Sunday in a recent release.
