Following Saturday’s assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, former President Trump traveled to Milwaukee to attend the Republican National Convention. He arrived with a bandaged ear after surviving the attack and was officially nominated by the Republican party.
On Monday at the convention, Trump named J.D. Vance as his running mate for the upcoming November election against President Joe Biden. Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio is the youngest vice-presidential pick since Richard Nixon in 1952.
Vance has not always been a supporter of former President Trump. He was once a harsh critic of Trump, calling him a “total fraud”, “moral disaster”, and “America’s Hitler”. His opinion changed during Trump’s term in office. In an interview, Vance said, “I was certainly skeptical of Donald Trump in 2016, but President Trump was a great president, and he changed my mind.”
After his 2016 publication of his memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy”, Vance quickly gained national attention. He was elected to the Senate in 2022 and became one of Trump’s biggest supporters, championing his agenda on trade, foreign policy, and immigration.
Trump announced the vice-presidential pick in a post on his Truth Social network as the convention began, saying, “After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio.”
The pair will face President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris at the polls in November.
