Steelers Players, Organization Have History of Giving Back to Pittsburgh

Fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers can count on the team to give it their all on the gridiron. The city has their back, and through a variety of philanthropic efforts, the Steelers have Pittsburgh’s back. The organization has long been recognized not only for their deep-rooted commitment to community service and philanthropy. Individual players and the organization have made significant contributions to the Pittsburgh area and beyond.

One of the prominent efforts is the NFL’s “My Cause My Cleats” campaign, in which Steelers players participate by wearing customized cleats to promote and support various charitable causes. These unique cleats serve as a platform for players to raise awareness and funds for issues close to their hearts. The initiative not only highlights the personal commitments of the athletes but also brings attention to a wide array of charitable organizations. After they’re worn in-game, the clears are auctioned online with 100% of the proceeds going to the specific charity. TJ Watt has worn cleats that raise awareness UPMC’s Children’s Hospital.

Meanwhile, defensive tackle Cam Heyward highlights his charity The Heyward House Foundation, which provides scholarships, meals, clothing and other items needed for children whose parents are suffering from brain cancer. Heyward’s father died from brain cancer. Because of Heyward’s dedication to his foundation and the children it helps, he was named the NFL’s 2023 Walter Payton Man of the Year, recognizing his outstanding community service activities off the field.

Like Heyward, other players have their own charities or programs. In August of last year, linebacker Alex Highsmith hosted his third annual Back to School Bash at the La Rosa Youth Club in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. The event provided over 300 local students with backpacks filled with school supplies, books, water bottles, and nutritious meals. Additionally, free haircuts and engaging activities were offered to help families prepare for the upcoming school year. The Alex Highsmith Family Foundation also organizes coat drives and Thanksgiving food distributions.

The Steelers also work in partnership with local businesses. The law firm Bordas & Bordas and the Steelers launched the 2024 “Sacks for Kids” initiative. For every sack recorded by the team during the season, Bordas & Bordas donates $500 to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Pittsburgh and Morgantown. This program not only incentivizes on-field performance but also provides substantial support to families in need. This year, Bordas and Bordas donated $26,000.

Quarterback Russell Wilson, currently in his first year with the Steelers, and his wife, singer Ciara, extended their philanthropic efforts to Pittsburgh with a donation from their foundation “Why Not You Center” donating $50,000 to the city’s Boys & Girls Club. Their foundation focuses on empowering youth through education and fighting poverty. This past December, the foundation distributed nearly 400 coats, hats, gloves, books, and holiday cheer to children and families in need, further demonstrating their commitment to the community.
