Primary Races to Watch: Allegheny County’s Upcoming Election

Voters in Allegheny County will elect their representatives in Congress, as well as state House and Senate members.

On May 19th, voters in Allegheny County will cast their votes in the primary election. Here’s who is running.

All seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, along with all Pennsylvania House seats and half of the state Senate seats, are up for election this year.

Races will be critical for Republicans as they seek to keep control of the U.S. House and state Senate, while Democrats aim to keep their majority in the state House.

Incumbent Representatives Summer Lee and Chris Deluzio are running for reelection in Pennsylvania’s 12th and 17th Congressional Districts respectively. Both are Democratic candidates for office.

Lee is being challenged by Republican James Hayes. “I will never turn my back on our fellow democracy, Israel, nor will I support the reckless economic and taxation schemes advanced by Rep. Lee and her extremist allies,” Hayes said.

Hayes is a free-market advocate that opposes the progressive ideals of incumbent Representative Lee.

Lee is also being challenged by Democrat Will Parker for the party’s nomination.

Opposing Deluzio are Republican challengers Sheriff Tony Guy and Jesse James Vodvarka. Vodvarka made an unsuccessful bid for the seat in 2024.

Allegheny County has 23 General Assembly seats on the ballot this year. Only six of them will have a contested primary on either party’s side.

In the 45th House District, the seat is open due to Representative Anita Kulik’s retirement. Four Democrats will be running to replace her, with two Republicans aiming to flip the seat.

Democrats currently control the state House by just one vote.

Along with representation in Congress and the General Assembly, voters will see incumbent Governor Josh Shapiro and Republican challenger Stacy Garrity advance to the gubernatorial election.

Neither Shapiro or Garrity, the State Treasurer, are facing challengers within their respective parties.
