During National Police Week, conservatives and those who believe our criminal justice system must enforce our laws, prosecute criminals, and ensure public safety in Pennsylvania, Washington, DC, and across the country took steps to make sure that law enforcement can do their jobs and keep Americans safe.
House Republicans passed three bills on Wednesday to support law enforcement over the opposition of most Democrats. The first, the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act, passed by a 265-148 margin and was opposed by Pittsburgh-area Representatives Summer Lee and Chris DeLuzio.
Deluzio and Lee voted together in opposition to several other pro-police bills, including the DC CRIMES Act and a resolution condemning the Biden border crisis especially for the burdens it has levied on law enforcement.
Lee even opposed the Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act, a bill that easily cleared the House by a 356-55 vote with the support of even House Democratic leaders.
The House ended the week by approving a resolution condemning violence against law enforcement, which sailed through the chamber by a 336-61 vote. All 61 nays were Democrats, including Summer Lee. Lee and Philadelphia-area Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon were the only Pennsylvania representatives to oppose the resolution.
What Deluzio and Lee’s votes demonstrate is a complete lack of understanding that where there’s crime, there must also be accountability-or more crime will follow. Despite their opposition, the legislation Republicans offered during National Police Week worked to help local governments prioritize police to deter violent crimes in a cost-efficient manner and make communities safer.
