The candidates selected by Democrats and Republicans will face off in March following the passing of Matt Gergely and will decide the majority for the PA House.
Dan Goughnour, a McKeesport police officer and school board member, secured the Democratic nomination to replace the late Matt Gergely in the 35th state House District. He will face Charles Davis, a Republican White Oak borough councilor, in a special election on March 25. This election, which comes after Gergely’s unexpected passing, will determine control of the state House, as the chamber has been evenly divided since his death two months ago.

Goughnour won out of a field of six candidates during a Saturday meeting of the Allegheny County Democratic Committee in McKeesport, garnering 46 votes out of 88 cast. He acknowledged the challenging work ahead and emphasized the importance of maintaining the seat for the Democratic Party. “We’ve got to get working,” Goughnour said, noting that his Republican opponent would be a challenge. “We have to keep this seat ours.”

While the vote was a recommendation, it’s expected that the state party leadership will support the local choice. Goughnour was considered the frontrunner going into the voting, most likely benefiting from the endorsement of McKeesport Mayor Mike Cherepko.
Goughnour said his primary focus would be ensuring that the needs of the Mon Valley are heard in Harrisburg. “I’m going to listen to what everyone’s needs are,” he explained, while reiterating his commitment to representing McKeesport.
On the Republican side, Davis was selected in a more subdued process, with local GOP leaders announcing his nomination via press release. Davis, a lifelong White Oak resident and volunteer firefighter for nearly fifty years, expressed his dedication to serving the community. “I am ready to step up, listen to the concerns of our residents, and work tirelessly to advocate for our community’s needs in Harrisburg,” he stated.
Both candidates expressed deep respect for Gergely’s legacy. Davis honored the former lawmaker’s service, while Goughnour, who considered Gergely a close friend, vowed to continue his work. “We miss Matt,” Goughnour said to the committee members, promising to carry on his legacy if elected.
