Last week, lawmakers in the House took action on a spending bill that carried more than just budget decisions. Tucked inside was the SAVE Act, a measure aimed at altering federal law to mandate that anyone signing up to vote in federal elections must provide proof of citizenship.
All House Democrats, including Reps. Chris Deluzio (PA-17) and Summer Lee (PA-12), voted against the bill. The bill ultimately failed when a few Republican representatives joined in voting “nay,” using it as a protest against government spending.
Lee previously voted against the SAVE Act, calling it a “xenopobic attack…that will make it harder for Americans to vote” when the bill was originally debated in July of this year.
Last year, Lee also voted against reinstating the Trump-era “Remain in Mexico” policy, calling the bill to extend it “cruel and extreme.” Both Lee and DeLuzio joined 156 other Democrats in voting against a bill that requires the deportation of illegal immigrants who assault law enforcement officers.
In February, Deluzio and Lee both voted against the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, opposing the move over his handling of immigration and the southern border.
According to experts, the number of illegal immigrants in the United States doubled under President Biden, with at least 10 million having entered the country illegally since Biden took office.
Rep Lee is also under scrutiny over her criticism of Israel in its war against terror organization Hamas. More than 3 dozen rabbis and cantors from Pittsburgh condemned Lee in an open letter, saying the Congresswoman was using “divisive rhetoric” that could be considered “openly antisemitic.”
