Governor Shapiro Reacts to Conflict with Iran, Trump Announces Ceasefire

As the conflict with Iran intensified, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro issued a statement. President Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.

After Israel preemptively attacked Iran’s nuclear development sites, the United States carried out strikes to three Iranian nuclear facilities. President Trump said Iran’s nuclear enrichment facilities had been “obliterated.”

The U.S. strike against Iran brought fear of retaliation towards the United States. Officials issued heightened terrorist threat warnings and prepared for increased cyber-attacks or attacks on American military bases overseas.

On Monday, Iran warned Qatar that it would be attacking an American military base in the Gulf country. The United States was aware of the planned attack before it was carried out.

Qatar closed its airspace and the missiles were intercepted. No injuries or deaths were reported.

Following the retaliation by Iran, President Trump announced a ceasefire has been agreed to between Israel and Iran following nearly two weeks of war.

In a social media post, Trump said the ceasefire will take effect after midnight on the East Coast of the United States, with the war to officially end 12 hours later.

“This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t and never will!” Trump wrote

Neither country has confirmed the ceasefire as of Monday evening.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro reacted to the growing conflict in the Middle East on Sunday, prior to the ceasefire announcement. Shapiro made a statement before his appearance at the Pocono Raceway for the Great American Getaway 400.

“Our job every single day is to ensure the safety and well-being of the good people of Pennsylvania. So, the first thing I want to say to the people of Pennsylvania is our security team, our state police, Homeland Security, and others, we’ve been in a dialogue with one another to make sure that there’s no threat to the Commonwealth as a result of what happened overseas. There is no threat to the people of Pennsylvania, they are safe, and we’re going to remain vigilant in our work here to keep the people of Pennsylvania safe,” Shapiro said.

He highlighted the need to “focus on diplomacy, in not having an escalation, in not allowing this to turn into a long war in the Middle East.”

Shapiro expressed his support of Americans overseas and his prayers for their safety during the ongoing conflict.
