KKK Flyers Found in Communities Across Western Pennsylvania, Including IUP Campus

Police are investigating the discovery of KKK flyers found in the western part of the Commonwealth.

Across western Pennsylvania, disturbing KKK flyers have been found in several communities.

Police are asking the public to turn over doorbell or camera footage that may capture the individual who left “hateful” flyers in the community.

In Indiana Borough, a mother discovered a dozen KKK flyers on the front lawn of her house. She is white and her husband and children are Black.

“We’re pretty much the only people of color on this block,” she said in a recent interview. One of her sons found the flyers.

“It’s heartbreaking, because if these are being put everywhere… it’s to make people afraid, it’s to intimidate. I am trying not to feel afraid because I know that’s what they want. I have to be strong for my kids and for people who don’t have a voice; I have to use my voice,” the mother said.

The discovered flyers advertise a neighborhood watch, saying people can “sleep soundly because the Klan is awake.”

The flyers have been found in Tarentum and Brackenridge.

Tarentum Borough Council President Scott Dadowski said in a statement, “Our region has endured tragedy after tragedy in recent years, the loss of loved ones, public safety challenges, and moments that test the very fabric of who we are. In times like these, it is more important than ever that we stand together, support one another, and refuse to let hate take root in our community. Hate and intimidation have no place in Tarentum. They do not belong in our streets, our homes, our schools, or our neighborhoods. Hate tries to divide us. But we are always stronger when we come together.”

The flyers were also found on campus at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

A letter was sent to students and employees after the flyers were found on sidewalks near the post office on campus. The people who reported the flyers removed and discarded them.

“The individuals removed and discarded these flyers, which were not approved for university posting,” said a release by IUP Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Tom Segar.

“IUP Police and Indiana Borough Police have been looking for additional flyers throughout the day; no additional flyers have been found.”

Police are continuing to investigate the appearance of the flyers in several communities across western Pennsylvania.
