The results of Pennsylvania’s election gave Democrats a narrow 102-101 majority in the State House of Representatives. On Tuesday, elected members participated in leadership elections for the chamber.
House Speaker Joanna McClinton (D, Philadelphia/Delaware) was reelected. House Majority Leader Matt Bradford (D, Montgomery) also retained his leadership post. Representative Mike Schlossberg (D, Lehigh) was elected House Majority Whip. Representative Jordan Harris (D, Philadelphia) was elected Appropriations Chair. Representative Rob Matzie (D, Beaver) was elected Caucus Chair.
House Democrats elected Representative Tina Davis (D, Bucks) as Caucus Secretary and Representative Leanne Krueger (D, Delaware) as Caucus Administrator. Representative Ryan Bizzarro (D, Erie) rounded out the House Democratic leadership as the Policy Chair.
The elected leaders issued a joint statement, saying, “House Democrats are committed to continuing our work to improve life for all Pennsylvanians, putting the needs of our communities first. Our top priority remains making life easier for working Pennsylvanians. We look forward to working with Governor Shapiro, House Republicans and the Senate to cut costs for working families, invest in our children’s education and grow our economy.”
On Tuesday, Republican Bryan Cutler announced that he would not run for reelection, and State Representative Jesse Topper (R, Fulton/Bedford) was elected Republican Leader of the State House.
Topper said, “First and foremost, I want to thank the people of Bedford and Fulton counties for trusting me to be their representative in Harrisburg. I also want to thank my House Republican colleagues for instilling their faith in me to serve as their caucus leader. While we are frustrated and disappointed to be in the minority in the House of Representatives, it is clear the people of Pennsylvania are ready for a new dawn. I will lead our caucus with the kind of core Republican principles that have made our party successful on the statewide and national level.”
Representative Jim Struzzi (R, Indiana) was elected to be the ranking Republican on the Appropriations Committee. Representative Tim O’Neal (R, Washington) will serve as GOP’s Whip.
