The names of the newest members of the Punxsutawney groundhog family have finally been unveiled after Phil did not see his shadow in February. Punxsutawney Phil and his wife, Phyllis, welcomed their latest offspring this year, adding to the legacy of the beloved weather-predicting groundhog. The young groundhogs are named Sunny, a girl, and Shadow, a boy.
The Groundhog Club made the announcement and has a long-standing tradition of naming the groundhog pups, reflecting their commitment to the Pennsylvania cultural icon that is Punxsutawney Phil and his family.
“Hear ye, hear ye, hear ye. Now, on this 12th of May in the town of Punxsy Phil, the news is not about the weather, spring air or winter’s chill. No, today the first family of groundhogs has grown. Punxsutawney Phil and wife, Phyllis, have two kits of their own. Born to royalty: a boy and a girl. Names have been chosen to share with the world. Welcome with us as we say hello to little girl Sunny and a boy Shadow with pride and joy as the kits play from Punxsutawney, happy Mother’s Day.”
As the young groundhogs grow, they will become a significant part of the Punxsutawney community and the larger Groundhog Day celebration.
